Thunderstorms Bring Impressive Rainfall To The Sioux Falls Area

Lots of us around the Sioux Empire were woken up by a line of thunderstorms that blew through the area overnight.

Throughout Wednesday (July 9), a cold front moved west to east across South Dakota, pushing a line of sometimes severe thunderstorms ahead of it. A little after midnight on Thursday, the storms moved through the Sioux Falls area, bringing wind, small hail, and lots of rain.

According to preliminary reports, Thursday morning, western Sioux Falls caught the brunt of the rain with nearly an inch and a half of precipitation.

Hail up to an inch in size was reported in Sioux Falls between midnight and 1:00 AM Thursday. During the storm, winds in Sioux Falls gusted to between 50 and 60 mph. Earlier Wednesday night, 80 MPH winds were reported in central South Dakota…
