School funding & property taxes at heart of opt-out battle

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A group is collecting signatures to put the Sioux Falls School District’s latest $2.1 million opt-out on the ballot.

For years, the district has opted out of the state property tax freeze to increase funding for public education. Several days a week from 11 to 1:00, a small group of like-minded people has been collecting signatures.

“We want to take it to a public vote, it’s never happened as far back as I can have researched, we would love for this to be the time for it to happen,” said Misty Furness, who describes herself as a mom who decided to do something.
