SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — For most of southeastern KELOLAND, we were able to avoid the worst case scenario regarding strong to severe storms. In SW Minnesota and portions of NW Iowa, however, they did achieve a few severe storms…with Cottonwood County even receiving a tornado warning for radar indicated rotation.
While the severe threat today is lower overall compared to Friday, it’s still in place as we head later into the day and into the night. It’s also not necessarily for the same location, either. This time, it’s West River that holds the better chance to see some elevated convection. With that said, some scattered showers and a few storms are still possible near and south of I-90 through the morning and early afternoon
A Slight Risk is in place for western South Dakota, with a Marginal Risk extending as far east as the Missouri River and snaking down along the SD/NE border through Sioux City. Wind and large hail are the main concerns with any storms that get their act together, but there’s always that non-zero risk for an isolated tornado. Stay weather aware as we head into the evening.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms will remain in the cards for the second half of the weekend, with chances being observed on both sides of the river this time around.
A Marginal Risk is in place for a vast majority of KELOLAND outside of SW South Dakota, SW Minnesota, and most of NW Iowa. Wind and hail are, again, the main concerns.
The upcoming work week is going to sound like we’re a broken record in the storm center. Daily chances for scattered showers and thunderstorms will be in place across KELOLAND as we go through the end of the week, as heat and humidity help fuel some of these storms. Some days will have better chances than others…like Monday and Wednesday as an example.
Next week will also feature a return to form with regard to midsummer conditions. Heat and humidity are back in the cards as we head toward the home stretch of July…
