Cornfields causing lower visibility for drivers

LENNOX, S.D. (KELO) — At one intersection in Lennox, there is corn growing on two corners. For drivers in the area, this means it’s harder to see oncoming traffic.

“The minute it gets above waist high, shoulder high, it starts to be a problem on some of our rural intersections that are not controlled by a stop sign,” said Harold Timmerman, Lincoln County Emergency Management coordinator.

Multiple Sheriff’s offices in the area have posted to Facebook, warning drivers about the dangers of tall corn and low visibility. Harold Timmerman with Lincoln County Emergency Management says he’s seen some severe accidents where drivers couldn’t see past crops and went into oncoming traffic. But there’s one thing you can do to lower your risk.

“We ask everybody to slow down on those intersections,” said Timmerman. “People don’t like to do that, but it can save a big mess for us because we’ve had some violent accidents on those intersections.”…
