HARRISBURG, S.D. (KELO) – Just 20 minutes southeast of Sioux Falls, there’s a town that was once considered small. But now, it’s growing so fast the city is hoping to do a special census to get a more accurate population count. And with more people comes more businesses.
At the time of the last census count, Harrisburg, South Dakota, had just over 6,700 residents. Now, just five years later, Mayor Derick Wenck says that number is pushing 11,000.

“They say the more rooftops you have, the more businesses look at you,” Wenck said. “Well, obviously, we finally got above that 10 thousand mark and we hit McDonald’s radar so that’s kind of cool to see. And we’re going to be breaking ground I think yet this Fall, end of summer here, on a new motel. So, it’ll be our first motel here in Harrisburg.”
McDonald’s and a motel aren’t the only businesses that have set their sights on Harrisburg recently, though…
