You may need to change your earpiercing plans; the company that owns the mall favorites Claire’s and Icing has declared bankruptcy and will close hundreds of stores across the nation this year. This includes stores in South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota.
Online Shopping Is Changing Retail
The retail world continues to change in the United States. Stores are closing all over in 2025, continuing a trend that was exacerbated by the pandemic. As consumers continue to move their shopping dollars to online stores and tastes change, the traditional retail businesses are getting harder.

The latest victim in the retail reorganization is the mall staple, Claire’s and Icing. The fashion and beauty accessory store, popular with young people, had its parent company file for bankruptcy earlier this year.
What’s Next for Claire’s Stores
In August, it was announced that the company is being bought by a group of investors led by the private equity firm Ames Watson. While this development will save some of Claire’s 1500 Claire’s and Icing locations in the US, new filings show that as the new entity takes over, 234 Claire’s locations and 56 Icing locations will be closed
