SFPD: Woman out $60,000 in scam

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A 66-year-old woman is out over $60,000 after losing money in a scam.

According to Sioux Falls Police spokesman Sgt. Aaron Benson, the woman claimed to have known a man who was hospitalized in an accident in Mexico City and was unable to reach him.

Benson said the officer was able to recognize that the woman was the victim of a scam involving gift cards.

The officer found out the woman had received a friend request she didn’t know on Facebook, and over the last nine months, communicated with him on a separate app.
