Sioux Falls city leaders react to prison vote

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — It is official. The new men’s prison will be built in Sioux Falls.

The process to get to this point included plenty of ups and downs, but officials are closer to replacing the aging South Dakota State Penitentiary.

It was a discussion that took the entire day, but lawmakers in Pierre voted to build a new men’s prison along Benson Road in northeast Sioux Falls. Sioux Falls City Council Vice Chair Jennifer Sigette and Mayor Paul TenHaken were happy with the legislature’s decision.

“Our population is not shrinking. It’s growing. If we had waited on this, this would have only added $50-100 million if we would have kept delaying this because it’s not an if, it’s a when. We know we have to do this, so I applaud the legislators that had the vision to push this forward and to say the time is now,” TenHaken said…
