Deadline approaching for free and reduced school lunches

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – A deadline is approaching for parents wanting to keep their children on free and reduced meal plans.

Staff inside the Child Nutrition office for the Sioux Falls School District are busy reviewing and approving applications as a deadline quickly approaches for free and reduced meal plans.

“Schools across the country are always given a 30-day grace period for families who had applied for free and reduced meals in the previous year,” Gay Anderson, SFSD Child Nutrition Coordinator, said. “So, it gives them 30 days to go and complete a new application and our 30-day grace period is ending at the end of this week on October 3rd.”

Anderson says right now about 49.8 percent of the student population qualifies for free and reduced meals, but that will likely change in the next few days due to families who don’t apply again…
