Student led groups boost mental health on college campuses

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — College campuses across South Dakota are gaining a new layer of support thanks to the growing efforts of the local nonprofit Lost&Found. With youth suicide a troubling and persistent issue, the organization has been mobilizing to establish peer-driven support groups.

Lost and Found has set up chapters on several college campuses in Keloland, including Augustana University in Sioux Falls. Emma Knott is a nursing and psychology major and plans to go into the mental health field. She’s the president of Lost & Found’s Augustana chapter.

“I have always had a passion for helping others, especially those who maybe aren’t great at advocating for themselves. You know, I got to college and I thought it was going to be amazing, and it was after I got settled, but that initial period was really hard for me, and my mental health was suffering a little bit, and I found a group that really embraced that and was a space for that to be safe, said Knott.

The Red Lake Falls, Minnesota native believes in the nonprofit’s mission to improve campus mental health for every student. Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for people between the ages of 10 and 24. In a 2025 Healthy Minds Study, 11 percent of college students reported seriously considering suicide in the past year.
