A helping of hope this Thanksgiving

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — On this cold Thanksgiving Day, volunteers were switching on the slow cookers and pouring up a warm meal inside the Union Gospel Mission’s Men’s Center.

“We have about 20 turkeys, 100 pounds of ham, 150 pounds of potatoes. We made about 15 gallons of gravy from scratch and about 60 pumpkin pies,” kitchen director John Fokken said.

The UGM prepares a Thanksgiving meal every year for its guests and anyone who wants to stop by.

“Every single one of us that works in the kitchen has experienced homelessness in our lives,” Fokken said. “Once you’ve been there, it’s kind of hard to want to do anything else.”…
