Snow and blowing snow likely the next 24-36 hours in KELOLAND

Good morning KELOLAND! Another round of winter weather is forecast across the region. First, they are getting an early start at Great Bear. What fantastic weather for making snow in late November.

If you are headed to the parade of lights downtown this evening, expect snow and temperatures in the lower 20s. The lights will sparkle in the snow for sure!

Driving in the snow is the problem. This system will come out in 2 pieces, with the first wave of snow forecast today. The second will arrive tomorrow. Our snow forecast adds the 2 together. Sioux Falls should be in the 5-10″ range, mainly due to the fluffier nature of the snow. The biggest numbers will be in northwestern IA, with lesser totals west of Sioux Falls.

This system will have a large reach. Expect 2-4″ of snow in Aberdeen, Watertown, and even Rapid City by late Saturday.

Take a look at Futurecast in the video below. Notice the first round of snow angles from northwest to southeast across central and eastern South Dakota. This should bring a general 1-3″ snow, but slightly heavier totals are expected near Mobridge.

Don’t forget about the chance of freezing drizzle late in the day into the evening across far southeast SD and northwest Iowa during the “lull” between the 2 waves of snow. We think snow rates will pick up late tonight in the Black Hills and spread eastward tomorrow. Snow and blowing snow will lead to worsening road conditions tomorrow in southeastern KELOLAND.

Stronger northwest winds tomorrow will play a direct role in travel troubles as the day goes on. You’ll notice the winds today from the southeast or east, but they will pivot to the northeast and eventually to the northwest on Saturday. The NW wind gusts will be strongest. As of now, they are not forecast to be at blizzard levels, but don’t discount the blowing and drifting snow, especially in NW IA.

Here are the details of the forecast…
