Opening statements in SF murder trial set for Wednesday

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Opening statements in a Sioux Falls murder trial are set for Wednesday at the Minnehaha County Courthouse.

The now-40-year-old Edward Brinkley is accused of killing 28-year-old Richard Sowers of Sioux Falls, who was discovered in a hallway outside his downtown apartment in March 2024. Sowers underwent emergency surgery but died from gunshot wounds.

Brinkley, who is on South Dakota’s sex offender registry, already has a criminal history that includes convictions for kidnapping, robbery and aggravated assault. Now, 15 jurors will soon examine if he’s guilty of taking a life. Possible jurors filled out a questionnaire on the case Friday in Sioux Falls.
