Snowy Saturdays force many local businesses to close early

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – The weeks before Christmas are usually full of people getting their holiday shopping done. However, with two back-to-back snowstorms happening over the past two weekends, many people have stayed at home, and it’s forced local businesses to close early, meaning that they lose out on some of their most crucial days for sales.

“From Thanksgiving on, I have never seen two big snowstorms as we’ve had in the last week and a half,” said Nancy Savage, owner of Child’s Play Toys. “We just make the best of it. We actually told most of our employees not to come in that day. And then we did send some home early, and so I just stayed until the end.”

Early closures also affect payroll, and while it’s never an easy decision to make, the safety of employees and customers must come first, especially when both may travel in from out of town…
