SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – On this week’s Wild Wednesday, Great Plains Zoo Education Specialist Katie Carchedil teaches us about box turtles!
“So, today we have Discover, and she is a three-toed box turtle. She has three toes in the back, and that’s where her name comes from. There are boc turtles all over the United States, and there are over 20 subspecies. Luckily, three toes make it easy to tell apart. We also have an eastern and an ornate back at the zoo, and they all look a little different,” said Carchedi.
Box turtles have a hinge on the bottom of their shell that can be flipped up, allowing the turtle to fit completely inside the shell…
