With Christmas down the hall and right around the corner, Sioux Area Metro (SAM) is getting festive and having fun by turning its buses into rolling holiday scavenger hunts.
Dakota News Now reports that SAM has launched its own version of Elf on the Shelf, with mischievous little elves hiding aboard select Sioux Area Metro buses throughout Sioux Falls.
The goal? Add a little seasonal magic to winter commuting while encouraging more folks to give public transit a try. And judging by the numbers, it’s working. According to Dakota News Now, Sioux Area Metro saw a 28% increase in ridership from October 2024 to October 2025, proof that more Sioux Falls residents are already hopping on board.

Torin Kalberg, Operations Manager for VIA, the parent company of Sioux Area Metro, told Dakota News Now the idea came straight from the front lines. “Inspired by one of our drivers, we wanted to create something lighthearted that brings people together while continuing to build excitement around public transit in Sioux Falls,” Kalberg said. “This program is designed to showcase the magic of transit and make the ride a little more enjoyable for everyone.”
So how does the holiday game work?
It’s simple. Several elves are riding along on different SAM buses and paratransit vehicles across the network. If you spot one during your ride, snap a photo and email it to [email protected], along with your name and contact information…
