Sioux Falls man sentenced to prison for possessing a gun

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A Sioux Falls man is going to prison for possessing a gun while asleep in his car.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Dakota, on September 28, 2024, Sioux Falls Police found Jamie Perez, 43, stopped on a city street, asleep behind the wheel while his car was running. The officers placed him under arrest for a DUI.

Oglala Tribe sends notice to federal officials

When officers were searching the vehicle, they found methamphetamine residue and a pistol. Perez is prohibited from owning a gun due to a 2018 felony drug conviction.

Perez pleaded guilty on October 7, 2025. The sentencing took place on January 12, 2026. He was sentenced to over a year in federal prison…
