In a perfect world, no animal would spend days inside a shelter’s walls. But unfortunately, some pets don’t have an easy journey finding their “fur-ever” home.
One South Dakota dog from the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society named Leia did find her new home…but her new life was short-lived.

Leia is a three-year-old Terrier/Mix who has been at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society for 267 days. She has been with other shelters in the past, and was even adopted after 84 days with the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. Sadly, Leia was returned to the shelter for reasons beyond her control. Since her return, staff say that Leia is “breaking.” This happy girl is starting to lose hope.
Since then, we have done everything we can to protect Leia from the emotional toll of long-term sheltering. She’s had a private room, foster attempts with multiple families, outings in the community through Rescue Dog Recess, extra enrichment, and extra care. But time and constant change leave marks that love alone can’t erase.
Leia was once a dog full of joy, enthusiasm, and she would always be excited for games. And her love for kisses and treats? She couldn’t get enough of either! However, the stress, noise, and the uneasy feeling of waiting for a second chance are taking a toll on Leia. This is truly a heartbreaking situation for anyone who knows Leia.
