Expanded farmers market, fishery among changes in Falls Park expansion

Sioux Falls City Council approved a long-term Falls Park Master Plan this week to address the flow of the growing number of visitors and to advancing a wish list of goals to turn the downtown waterfall landscape into what they’re calling a “Signature Park” destination spot for locals and tourists.

The Sioux Falls City Council passed the initiative Feb. 2 by a 5-1 vote after it received unanimous approval at the Parks and Recreation Board meeting on Jan. 21. Councilor Curt Soehl, the only opposing vote, stated the plan “really falls short” due to its lack of timetable and funding.

The estimated $100 million expansion plan, which the Council confirmed does not currently include dedicated funding in the City’s capital improvement program or annual budget, intends to serve as a roadmap or “vision” for the next 30 to 50 years, according to a Dec. 23 city-issued press release…
