SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Several ash trees along the Big Sioux River and Yankton Trail Park will be removed due to the emerald ash tree borer infestation.
2025 criminal offenses down 6% compared to 2024 in SD
Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation says the removal of the trees is part of a proactive emerald ash tree borer management plan. City staff have marked trees identified as safety risks.
Weather dependent, the removal project will start on February 23 and end on March 6 at the latest.
During the project, Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation will:
- Identify and mark infested ash trees at risk of falling on the trails.
- Clear brush to allow arborists to safely and efficiently access marked ash trees.
- Remove marked ash trees and haul debris off-site.
- Assess the cleared area for replanting opportunities in the spring of 2026.
