Smithfield opposition small minority, Lt. Gov. says

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The planned Smithfield project and the voiced opposition to it were a question at Gov. Larry Rhoden’s news conference Thursday morning.

Rhoden said he’s not had any conversations with Smithfield about opposition. “Nothing’s hit my radar as far as any concerns that are going to be a major roadblock,” Rhoden said. He has seen some of the meetings that have happened, Rhoden said.

Opposition has been voiced at a March 4 Sioux Falls Planning Commission meeting, where several Crooks residents or nearby residents said the proposed Smithfield plant would create traffic safety concerns, create an odor and other problems. Concerns were also raised about the planned $89.9 million tax increment finance district. The same concerns were shared by the majority of a few-hundred-person crowd at a meeting in Crooks on Monday.
