Union leader: Smithfield wages competitive

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Employees at Smithfield were mentioned several times during Tuesday night’s discussion about a conditional use permit (CUP) and a tax increment finance (TIF) district tied to the company’s move to Foundation Park.

Some who spoke against the TIF and had questions about the CUP, said the company pays low wages while top executives make high wages. In relation to the TIF, people said Smithfield makes enough money to pay for all of its wastewater plant and also, why would the city financially help the company when employees get low wages, some people said. Other comments included that employees needed to use services such as SNAP and related because of low wages.
