FLANDREAU, S.D. (KELO) — Several Flandreau Police and Moody County Sheriff’s vehicles were parked outside a building in the northeast part of town Thursday morning. Building owner Jeff Weigel and family members were seen taking some of their belongings out of the building, which crews started to tear down soon after the video was taken.

Flandreau city administrator Cohl Turnquist said, “The property has been cited for code enforcement violations going back to 2020… no steps were taken to bring the property into compliance… and for the last several months the city has given him notice of intent to demolish.”
Weigel told KELOLAND News that he did not hear about the code violations until 2023, when he started to take steps to repair the building. He said, “They sent letters about the back of my building, and I’ve been slowly addressing them. That was damage from a derecho windstorm…”
As for the police presence, Turnquist said authorities were there to ensure the safety of the property owners, public and demolition crew…
