Parks and Rec director Kearney to retire after 20 years

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Sioux Falls will be looking for a new Parks and Recreation Director.

Don Kearney will retire Friday after nearly 21 years in the position, the city announced Tuesday morning. Kearney joined the city on July 18, 2005, and guided the department through nearly two decades of expansion, adding 17 parks for a total of 84 and delivering major projects that broadened recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.

Assistant Director Brett Kollars will serve as interim director until the next mayor is appoints a director.

“Don Kearney has played a central role in building a parks system that is recognized as one of the best in the country,” Mayor Paul Tenhaken said in a news release. “We deeply appreciate this nearly 21 years of dedicated service and we recognize that his steady leadership has helped shape many of the city’s most valued quality-of-life amenities for our residents.
