Local ‘craftivist’ and sewist Tori Thurman inspires others to rethink fashion through her upcycling classes

We’ve all banished to the back of the closet a favorite clothing item spoiled by a hole or stain.

Don’t give up yet. Local mender and social media creator Tori Thurman, who runs a YouTube channel called The Crafty Grrl and leads programs at Spokane Zero Waste, has plenty of tips to rescue or repurpose such garments so you can proudly wear them again.

In the past decade, thrifting and upcycling, or turning textiles otherwise headed to landfills into new creations, has become more mainstream. At secondhand stores, it’s not unusual to see people wearing handsewn or altered clothing rifling through racks in search of their next textile treasures…
