SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Municipal Court and the Spokane Police Department warned that scammers have been calling out-of-custody defendants and their family members to demand money before first appearance hearings.
According to the city in a release, the callers threaten arrest if people do not pay. Officials said some scammers also falsely claim the court stops using ankle monitors.
Instead, the callers tell people they would have to use bracelets that look like Apple Watches, the city said. The court said that claim is false and confirmed it still uses ankle devices for pretrial monitoring…
