Kaiser Canyon and Modrite fires leave families rebuilding on tribal land

WASHINGTON — More than 40 families were left without homes after the Kaiser Canyon and Modrite fires, as Colville tribal leaders worked through containment and the first steps of recovery.

Leaders said both fires were about 98% to 100% contained. They said the fires burned about 200,000 acres, including 100,000 acres of timber, and more than 100 structures were lost.

The damage stretched across Colville tribal land, which reaches about 1.4 million acres overall. Tribal leaders said 1 million of those acres have burned since 2015…
