Spokane woman accused of trying to kidnap child in daylight

SPOKANE, Wash. — A 46-year-old woman appeared in court after prosecutors said she tried to take a 3-year-old child near Sixth Avenue and Maple in Spokane.

Arrest documents said a mother was walking with her two young children when Jessica Downing approached and grabbed the 3-year-old from a stroller. The documents said the mother tried to get the child back before Downing punched her several times and both ended up on the ground.

Prosecutors said Downing eventually let go of the child. She was first booked on a first-degree kidnapping charge, and second-degree kidnapping and attempted second-degree kidnapping charges were later added…
