Positioning of fire truck saves lives in Spokane Valley crash over the weekend

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — The Spokane Valley Fire Department is down a truck following a crash Saturday afternoon.

The crew of Ladder Truck 10 stopped at a crash off the shoulder of EB I-90 at the Sullivan Road Interchange when a new crash suddenly happened.

“She hit the back of our truck now she’s in the middle of the freeway,” Dave Griffiths, provisional captain on Ladder 10, said. “We’re unprotected, she’s unprotected.”

Radio call audio was released from Saturday’s crash.

“Yes, send them,” Griffiths said in the call. “We just had another vehicle slide into our truck, and she’s a red patient. Send me a full extrication response, and get the state out here and sand. These roads are a sheet of ice.”

Through Saturday morning, the roads became extremely icy, causing many accidents as SVFD responded to the one they, themselves, were hit.

“I was actually in there making lunch when I heard him on the radio say ‘ladder truck has been hit by a truck, start an extrication response,'” Matt Jorgensen, Battalion chief at SVFD, said. “And we had a red patient which means [it’s] a pretty serious patient.”
