Leonard Byrne, principal tuba for Spokane Symphony, has died

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Symphony announced that Leonard Byrne, principal tuba for the orchestra, died Monday morning.

Byrne has been a member of the Spokane Symphony since 1975. The Spokane Symphony says Burns was “a passionate advocate and supporter of the orchestra and his fellow musicians. A man of intelligence and thoughtfulness, he was always attentive to the future success of the Spokane Symphony and welfare of its musicians.”

Leonard was also described as a ” loving husband and highly valued friend, colleague and community member.” Leonard’s wife, Helen, is the assistant principal cellist for the Spokane Symphony.

Leonard is from Seattle and earned an advanced degree in electrical engineering from the University of Idaho.

The Spokane Symphony says plans are forthcoming to honor Leonard.
