Man arrested by SWAT, Cheney police for firing weapon while in standoff

CHENEY, Wash. — Law enforcement in Cheney arrested a man they say was suicidal and fired a gun multiple times near officers Wednesday morning.

According to Cheney police, officers responded to a reported suicidal person who had shot into the ceiling of an apartment at W. 1st Street near Buena Vista Street around 3:30 a.m.

The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Asahel Chavez, stayed inside the apartment while the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, SWAT, Airway Heights police, and EWU police responded to the scene.

Police say Chavez fired multiple shots into the door where he believed police were and texted a family member about planning to “suicide by cop.”

Around 6 a.m., Chavez surrendered to law enforcement and was arrested for multiple charges including assault and reckless endangerment.

Detectives seized multiple firearms, ammo and spent casings.
