Non-profit C.O.P.S gives advice on how to settle neighborhood disputes

SPOKANE, Wash.—A neighborhood confrontation turned deadly in north Spokane on Tuesday.

According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, deputies had responded to a reported person threatening to kill his neighbor with a baton. Prior to this, the suspect had trespassed and damaged the victim’s property.

After numerous times to de-escalate the situation, the Sheriff’s office says they decided to breach the door. According to the Sheriff’s office, the suspect then aggressively came after deputies. That’s when they shot and killed him.

Neighbors tell 4 News Now that they are shaken up.

So, what should someone do if they are having ongoing issues with a neighbor? The non-profit, Spokane Community Oriented Policing Services or C.O.P.S, says it’s good to try and calmly communicate with your neighbor. If that doesn’t work there are other options.

“A lot of people might be surprised to know you can call law enforcement for assistance with things like a barking dog or loud parties or a disturbance. And law enforcement officers, from my experience, would like to intervene in a situation before it gets out of control,” David Morris, Spokane C.O.P.S Field Operations Manager said.
