Glen Dow Academy closing after 55 years

SPOKANE, Wash. — After 55-years in business, the iconic Glen Dow Academy is closing.

Glen Dow Academy has been providing top-tier training in Spokane since 1969. Whether that’s been teaching people how to do hair, or do nails, the school has left a mark on many local stylists.

Its a family-owned business and there is no one that wants to continue its legacy.

Glen Dow’s daughter who now manages the property said she’s ready to enjoy retirement, but both her and her father are emotional about the decision to close.

“It’s very emotional. Especially since I grew up in the industry,” Jennifer Von Doehren, Glen Dow’s daughter said.

Von Doehren’s earliest memory of the salon was working the front desk while she was in high school.

What you don’t see when you drive past Glen Dow’s Academy are the memories it holds inside.

It has played a pivotal role in many local stylists’ careers. Like one woman who graduated from there over 20 years ago as a single mom.

“They were there. There was an understanding, and they helped you and they supported me in that and all of the ladies were supporting. So having that kind of family culture in the beauty industry that say we’ve got you, we’re here for you is kind of what I came away with from there,” Scarlet Rosenberg, owner of Broadway Salon and Spa said.
