Don’t expect to see a lot of snow to end this winter

SPOKANE, Wash.– Snow is trying to wiggle back into the forecast across the Inland Northwest, and it may be now or never.

While we see cooler weather and some small chances for snow in the coming days, the long-term outlook isn’t looking great for snow lovers.

So far this winter, Spokane is stuck on 23.3″ of snow. The next eight weeks average 10.6″ of snow. If the rest of the season goes back to normal, that would bring the implied total for this season to 33.9″ That’s almost exactly average for an El Niño winter in the Lilac City. However, Mother Nature likely has a different plan.

Eight of the last nine El Niño winters saw the season end with hardly any snowfall. The average snowfall for these eight winters from February 7th to April 3rd was just 3.24″.

Then there’s the weather pattern for the end of February. An overwhelming majority of weather computer models place high pressure over the Northwest starting this weekend and continuing for the majority of the month. The U.S. Climate Prediction Center is calling for a warm, dry pattern into the beginning of March.
