Risings costs play factor for voters against Spokane Public Schools bond

SPOKANE, Wash. — People who live in Spokane County rejected every school bond, including the one for Spokane Public Schools this week.

4 News Now asked people why they chose to vote no, and their responses varied.

As we know, inflation has been a major headache for everyone. People who voted against the bond say it’s also because of skyrocketing property values.

“[I] think that they are going to put another bond on levies that are already in place,” Richard Kline, who voted against the Spokane schools bond, said. “We can’t afford it.”

Living in the same home for decades, Kline recently retired from working 30 years at the VA Hospital.

“My retirement doesn’t increase,” Kline said. “Going to the grocery stores on [a] weekly basis, everything is increasing.”

Over the last five years, his property taxes have doubled.

“We are actually losing money living in Spokane,” Kline said. “We are going to lose substantially more if the bond passes.”

Responses from people who voted against the bond had similar reasons. Several people mentioned the downtown stadium and how they are still upset about it.
