Local food pantry prepares for 400-person barbecue with free giveaways

AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. — A food pantry modeled after a grocery story is preparing to host hundreds of community members for a festive barbecue in July.

On July 18, Cleone’s Closet near West Sunset Highway and Lundstrom Street in Airway Heights will host their second annual “Neighborhood Barbecue” at The Heights Church, 12703 W. 14th Avenue in Airway Heights.

The free barbecue is the result of a partnership with Amazon in Spokane and is an opportunity for people to come together, enjoy fun games, good food and receive great giveaways.

Last year, the barbecue drew close to 400 people and gave away roughly 300 free gifts, such as air fryers, electronics, clothing, shoes and more.

Most of the giveaway items were donated by Amazon.

“They asked us to do an event because they wanted to give back to the community,” said Cleone’s Closet’s founder, Mabel Dunbar.

Dunbar’s mission with Cleone’s Closet and its umbrella organization, Women’s Healing and Empowerment Network , is to provide people in need with food and a safe, supportive environment.
