Hoopfest court raises awareness for young men’s mental health

SPOKANE, Wash. — One family’s Hoopfest court is raising awareness of mental health at this year’s tournament.

The Hoopfest court near Washington Street and Riverside Avenue is sponsored by the Kellen CARES Foundation.

“Turning the corner and seeing that just makes my heart. It’s bittersweet,” said Kimber Erickson.

Erickson’s son, Kellen, died by suicide in 2020.

Today, the Kellen CARES Foundation helps young men and their families navigate mental health issues.

Hoopfest was one of Kellen’s favorite events.

“Kellen, he loved basketball so much. I mean, he loved playing, he loved watching. It’s just Kellen,” said Erickson.

Erickson’s family and the foundation requested their Hoopfest court host young boys to amplify their organization’s message.

“It’s okay to ask for help. It’s okay that they’re struggling. That’s a part of life. But they need to reach out to somebody. It’s so important,” said Erickson.

Kellen’s family believes their Hoopfest court is next to the last court Kellen played on.
