Thousands of Spokane families line up for free shoes, school supplies

SPOKANE, Wash. – Thousands of Spokane families came out to Underhill Park for a community back-to-school celebration.

The event had fun games and free food. The main draw, however, was the free backpacks and shoes being handed out by The Way To Justice, a local non-profit law firm.

More than 2,500 kids registered to pick up shoes and there were still thousands more waiting in line to get a pair, some waiting hours.

Dawn Dykeman, a mother with four school-aged children, said with the way store prices are right now, events like this make a huge difference.

“I am a single working mom of four so it is very stressful,” Dykeman said. “Back to school, birthdays, anything that has to do with the kids is very stressful. Events like this for the community… I am very grateful and my kids are very thankful for everything everyone does.”

This was the second year The Way to Justice put on this event.

The firm said it hopes to continue the tradition for years to come.
