City of Spokane lays off employees as budget cuts continue

SPOKANE, Wash – The City of Spokane confirmed two people were laid off and positions eliminated due to ongoing budget concerns.

Communications director Erin Hut confirmed to 4 News Now that Julie Humphreys and Brian Walker were let go and their positions eliminated.

Humphreys was the communications director for public safety; Walker was the communications manager for community and economic development.

The City of Spokane has asked departments to conduct a budget exercise in which they eliminate 10 percent from their budget. The city is reviewing the potential impacts of those cuts as it makes decisions about how to fill a $50 million budget hole.

Hut said no other concrete decision have been made, but that if layoffs are necessary, employees would be notified by the end of September.
