Elderly man accused of being impaired hits two motorcyclists in Liberty Lake

LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. — An 83-year-old man was arrested Thursday night after Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies say he crashed into two motorcyclists in Liberty Lake.

Deputies said they were called to the area of E. Appleway Blvd. and Spokane Bridge Rd. around 8:20 p.m. along with Liberty Lake Police and first responders.

Investigators said they found two women with potentially serious injuries down in the road. They said Robert Howland went straight on a curve and hit the women riding motorcycles head-on.

A Traffic Unit Deputy and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) determined he had probable cause to believe Howland was driving impaired when the crash happened. The Sheriff’s Office did not specify whether they suspected alcohol, drugs or both.

Howland faces charges of vehicular assault. The two women are expected to recover from their injuries.
