Hundreds help preserve Spokane River’s health by pulling thousands of pounds of trash

SPOKANE, Wash. — Volunteers gathered along the Spokane River Saturday for the 21st annual River Clean Up event.

During this one-day event, volunteers typically pull between 3,000 and 5,000 pounds of trash out of our riverbanks.

The Public Lands council organizes the yearly event in partnership with the Spokane Riverkeeper and Spokane River Forum.

This year’s event brought together hundreds of volunteers who helped improve the environmental health and safety of the Spokane River.

“A lot of that trash can have toxics in it that gets in our water, and getting it before it gets in the river is a great head start,” said Adam Gebauer, public lands program director with the Lands Council.

Volunteers were located at various spots throughout Spokane and the valley.

The event also partnered with the city, who helped with getting rid of all the trash.

The Lands Council hosts plenty of events throughout the year that help take care of our city.
