Spokane Council to host first Community Days of 2025

SPOKANE, Wash. — Haiti’s independence from France will be celebrated in the Chase Gallery in Spokane’s City Hall on Monday.

It’s part of the City Council’s Community Days, a program designed to help communities within Spokane feel welcomed in the Lilac City.

The idea of Community Days began last year when the Council and the Equity Subcommittee found that certain groups of people didn’t feel welcome at city activities.

In an effort to make the communities feel at home, the Council opened up the Chase Gallery as a place for them to set up tables, provide resources, food, music and display art.

Community members then stay for the Council’s legislative session.

A proclamation is read at the beginning of the meeting recognizing the community.

At the Monday, Jan. 6th meeting the Haitian Community will be recognized.

Haiti’s Independence Day is January 1, 1804.  It had previously been under French control.

Last year the Council hosted three community days.
