Man sentenced to 17 years for murder of tribal elder on Colville Reservation

SPOKANE, Wash. – A man was sentenced to 17 years in prison after murdering a person on the Colville Reservation.

Steven Zacherle, 38, was sentenced to 204 months in prison for second-degree murder in Indian Country and threats in interstate commerce, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Richard R. Barker. A judge also ordered five years of supervised release and restitution to the Colville Confederated Tribes for funeral expenses.

The incident occurred on Oct. 18, 2022, during a domestic dispute on the Colville Indian Reservation. Zacherle threatened his partner via calls and texts after she left him at a gas station. Shortly afterward, Zacherle attacked Dion Boyd, a Colville Tribe elder, causing fatal injuries…
