Spokane experts guide new gardeners amid rising grocery costs

SPOKANE, Wash. – As inflation continues to impact grocery prices, some Spokane residents are turning to self-reliant methods like gardening. The latest Consumer Price Index showed a 3% rise in overall food prices. Eggs have surged over 60%, while apples and lentils have seen increases of almost 5% and more than 3% respectively.

With warmer weather approaching, many are questioning if growing their own food might be a more cost-effective option. NonStop Local’s Justin Spinnie spoke with experts at Ritters Plants and Gift to find out more.

Kristin Pearce and Dalton Luke, plant experts at Ritters, noted an increase in first-time vegetable gardeners. “This year, we have had some people coming in that haven’t done any kind of vegetable garden before,” they said. Despite the challenges of gardening, they reassured newcomers, “You’re not alone. It feels very intimidating, but we love helping people.”…
