New ‘particularly dangerous situation’ warning added in Eastern Washington

WASHINGTON – The National Weather Service has introduced a new warning called the “particularly dangerous situation” (PDS) red flag warning. This aims to alert the public and firefighting community about extreme fire weather events.

A local meteorologist shared insights on this new warning. “Weather service offices throughout the West, have added the red flag and really as a way to try to warn the public and the firefighting community of those really extreme fire weather events that we and we have seen those events,” they said. The meteorologist emphasized, “it’s really the weather service way of screaming, hey, this is a really extreme event.”

The PDS red flag warning is not expected to be issued frequently. It should be used approximately once every five to ten years on average…
