Convicted Spokane killer dies in prison cell

WASHINGTON, USA — Joshua Phillips, the Spokane man convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend and stabbing her 5-year-old daughter in 2021, was found dead in his prison cell just after midnight on Aug. 3, 2025, according to the Washington Department of Corrections (DOC).

A DOC spokesperson said foul play is not suspected, but the exact cause of death has not been determined. The department will conduct an unexpected fatality review, and the findings will be released at a later date.
