Spokane fire chief retiring in October; leadership change announced

SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Fire Chief Julie O’Berg will retire October 6 after 36 years in the fire service, with Mayor Lisa Brown naming Assistant Chief Tom Williams as her successor effective October 7.

O’Berg became the first woman to permanently lead the Spokane Fire Department in April 2024. She joined the department in 2020 as Deputy Chief of Operations and agreed to serve as Interim Fire Chief before accepting the permanent position.
