Border patrol responds to ‘Safe and Welcome in Spokane’ ordinance

SPOKANE, Wash. — Border patrol responded to the Spokane City Council’s new ordinance, “Safe and Welcome in Spokane,” saying it will not change their enforcement strategy.

“Spokane Sector Border Patrol takes the new ‘Safe and Welcome in Spokane’ city ordinance at face value and assesses that it has no impact to our border security operations,” they wrote.

The ordinance — passed on August 25 —aims to block federal immigration enforcement from entering private events without a warrant. Councilors proposed the ordinance in light of Tacos y Tequilas’ cancellation this summer. Organizers canceled the event over fears that ICE agents would target the Latino community there…
