‘I’m on my own’: Customers denied damages, answers for cars burned and lost after auto shop fire in Spokane Valley

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — The fire-damaged Firestone auto shop on Spokane Valley’s University and Sprague looks much the same as it did 49 days ago. For Shiela Van Voorhis, it’s been a visual reminder of the standstill she’s been in ever since.

“It’s been a month-and-a-half and my car is still here,” she says, pointing at the boarded up bay windows. “They haven’t released it to my insurance. I haven’t been paid out by my insurance.”

Her car was inside on a lift when something in the back of the maintenance shop caught fire. That’s according to a Spokane Valley Fire investigation report where the investigator also noted burned tires obscured evidence at the ignition site that would have pointed to what started the fire July 30…
