Spokane City Council unites behind criminalizing camping despite lack of shelter beds

Anwar Peace says the young woman’s feet were black from frostbite when she limped into the city’s new Navigation Center at the homeless day shelter on Cannon Street last week. Workers immediately connected her to emergency medical care, but the damage was already done.

“Unfortunately it’s more than likely she’s going to be facing some amputations,” he says. “She was walking on those feet for so long.”

As director of peer navigation, it’s Peace’s job to connect homeless people to services after they arrive at the center, whether that’s a shower, a ride to an overnight shelter, or medical attention…
